Caring for a new mama dog is a big responsibility, but with the right knowledge and preparation, you can set both her and her puppies up for success. Here are some key things to remember:

Maintain a Comfortable Temperature:

Just-born puppies: After birth, puppies are unable to regulate their body temperature themselves. Provide a warm, draft-free environment using a heating pad or hot water bottle covered in a towel. Aim for a temperature of around 85°F (29°C).

Mama dog: While the mama dog is less susceptible to cold, she is still recovering and needs a comfortable environment. Ideally, keep the room temperature between 70°F-75°F (21°C-24°C).

Postpone Bath Time:

Resist the urge to bathe your dog immediately after delivery. Her immune system is weakened, and bathing can increase the risk of infection.

Instead, use a warm, damp cloth to gently wipe away any dirt or fluids.

Deworming is Crucial:
Both the mama dog and her puppies should be dewormed regularly to prevent parasite transmission. Consult your veterinarian for a recommended deworming schedule.
Keep the whelping box and the dog's belongings clean and disinfected to minimize parasite exposure.

Offer a Quiet, Stable Space:

A new mama dog needs peace and quiet to recover and bond with her pups. Provide a designated area away from loud noises and excessive activity.
Be mindful of approaching the mama dog, especially when her puppies are around. She may exhibit protective behavior.

Calcium Support is Essential:

Nursing mothers lose a lot of calcium, which can lead to health problems like eclampsia. Supplement your dog's diet with calcium-rich foods like bone broth or commercial calcium tablets recommended by your vet.

Feeding: Let Her Appetite Guide You:

Don't force your dog to eat right away. Her appetite will likely be suppressed initially. Offer small amounts of easily digestible food when she shows interest.
Choose a high-quality puppy food moistened with water or broth for increased palatability and hydration. Add fruits and vegetables for extra nutrients.

Additional Tips:

  • Monitor the mama dog and puppies closely for any signs of illness or distress.
  • Schedule a checkup with your veterinarian within a few days after birth.
  • Consider crate training the puppies to give the mama dog some personal space.
  • Be patient and understanding as your dog adjusts to motherhood. With proper care and love, she will thrive and raise healthy, happy puppies.
